Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
