Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
